about

The house in the first verse is a representation of my body. "The front yard" is how I present myself, "the back stairs" are the personality traits other people don't see, and "the attic" is where my thoughts are. There are a couple of sounds I used to conjure the imagery of church culture in this song, such as the chorus harmonies and bell tower.

lyrics

The front yard is golden
Truth's clandestine in the back stairs
And up in the attic is the source of my grey hair
I've never gone and mapped outside of myself
The lines I chart could differ from everyone else

Maybe I'll never get into the city
Even heaven's a gated community
Could it ever really be that pretty
Even heaven's a gated community

Welded shut what sprouted up in my mind
Forever trapped in the tomb connected to my spine
And what's not important is has, had, will have
When I can hardly remember the best days that I've had

Maybe I'll never get into the city
Even heaven's a gated community
Could it ever really be that pretty
Even heaven's a gated community
